Generative engine optimization: get recommended by AI
Last updated: October 2026
More buyers now ask an AI assistant before they search. Generative engine optimization (GEO) makes your business easy for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini to understand, trust and cite, so the answer they give names you.

The basics
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization is the work of making your website a source that AI systems choose when they write an answer. Classic SEO aims for a position in a list of results. GEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself, often with a link back to your page.
You will also hear two related terms:
- Answer engine optimization (AEO): shaping content so it can be lifted as a direct answer, such as a featured snippet, a voice assistant reply or an AI summary.
- AI search optimization or LLM SEO: broader names for the same goal across all AI tools.
The labels overlap, and the work behind them is largely the same. One point matters more than the vocabulary: GEO is built on SEO, not instead of it. Google states that pages shown in AI Overviews come from its index and follow the same quality systems as regular results (AI features and your website, Google Search Central). A site that cannot rank will rarely be cited. That is why we pair this service with our SEO services.
Why it matters
Why AI answers matter for local businesses
When someone asks "Who is the best periodontist in Beverly Hills?" or "Can a doctor come to my house in Los Angeles tonight?", an AI assistant does not show ten options. It names a few businesses and explains why. If you are not one of them, the buyer may never visit a search results page at all.
Three changes make this urgent:
Google AI Overviews appear on many informational and comparison searches
They sit above the regular results, and they cite only a few sources.
Buyers ask longer, more specific questions
In AI tools they ask the kind of question that a well-structured service page or FAQ can answer directly.
Being cited builds trust before the first call
A practice that the AI recommends and links to starts the conversation with credibility a plain ad cannot buy.
For healthcare, dental and legal businesses there is a second reason: AI tools prefer sources that show real expertise, credentials and clear facts. Those are exactly the signals regulated businesses should publish anyway.
What we optimize
What our generative engine optimization covers
Entities and facts
AI systems connect information about a business across the web. We make sure your name, address, phone, services, people and credentials are stated the same way on your site, your Google Business Profile and major directories, so the AI is never unsure who you are.
Structured data
We add schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Person, FAQ and others that fit) so machines can read the facts on each page without guessing.
Answer-first content
Each service page and article opens with a clear, quotable answer, then supports it with detail, sources and examples. Headings follow the questions people actually ask.
Authority and citations
Mentions on trusted sites, reviews and consistent profiles help AI tools decide whom to trust. We build these alongside your SEO work.
Technical access
AI crawlers have to reach and read your pages. We check robots rules, page speed, rendering and indexing so nothing blocks them.
Our process
How a generative engine optimization project runs
Baseline
We record where AI tools cite you and your competitors today, so every later change can be measured against it.
Fix the facts
Business details, schema and profiles are corrected first, because a confused AI will not cite a source it cannot pin down.
Rewrite for answers
Your most important service pages and FAQs are restructured so each question gets a clear, quotable answer near the top.
Build authority
Reviews, citations and helpful articles add the outside signals AI tools look for.
Track and adjust
Monthly reports show new citations, lost ones and the next pages to improve.
Most projects run alongside ongoing SEO, since the same pages serve both Google rankings and AI answers.
How we measure
How we measure AI visibility
You cannot improve what you do not track. Each month we report:
- Google AI Overview citations: how many tracked queries show an AI Overview that cites your site, and how often you are the first source. Measured with DataForSEO data for Google US.
- Answer share in AI assistants: a fixed set of buyer questions about your services, checked in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with who gets named and linked.
- Referral visits from AI tools: sessions that arrive from AI assistants, from your Google Analytics 4 data.
We report changes against the previous month and against your main competitors, with notes on what we changed and what we will try next.
Results
Early results from generative engine optimization
Cited as a source in Google AI Overviews, measured across three healthcare clients:
| Client | AI Overview citations | As first source |
|---|---|---|
| West Medical | 1,100 | 141 |
| Beverly Hills Periodontics | 931 | 205 |
| House Call Doctor LA | 274 | 57 |
| Total | 2,305 | 403 |

Example: for the query "24 hour doctor call", Google's AI Overview cites House Call Doctor LA's page as its first source.

FAQ
Generative engine optimization FAQ
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO builds on SEO. Google still has to find, index and trust your pages before its AI features can cite them. GEO adds structured facts, clear entities and answer-first writing so AI tools can quote you accurately.
Can you guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will recommend my business?
No. No one controls what AI systems say, and their answers change often. We improve the signals they rely on and report what changes, month by month.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
If your site already ranks, structured data and content changes can lead to new citations within weeks to a few months. Sites starting from zero need the SEO foundation first, which usually takes 3 to 6 months to show movement.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It does no harm, but it is not a ranking or citation factor in Google today. We focus first on the signals that matter now: crawlable pages, structured data, consistent business facts and content that answers real questions.
Which AI tools do you optimize for?
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. They differ in detail, but they reward the same things: trusted sources, clear facts and helpful content.
