Google started showing AI Overviews for more searches in several industries from April 25, 2025, according to BrightEdge data reported by Search Engine Journal on May 1, 2025. BrightEdge tracks which queries trigger an AI Overview with its Generative Parser tool.

What changed

  • Entertainment: coverage grew by about 175%. Actor filmography searches made up about 76% of the new queries.
  • Travel: location-specific searches grew by about 108%, mostly questions about things to do in a given place at a given time.
  • Insurance: nearly 8% growth.
  • B2B technology: about 7% growth, led by technical how-to questions such as containers and data management.
  • Education: nearly 5% growth, about a third of it from online degree and professional certification searches.

What it means for your website

AI Overviews are not spreading evenly. They grow first where a question has a clear, factual answer or needs planning across several sources. When an Overview answers the question on the results page, many people do not click further, so pages that only repeat basic facts tend to lose traffic first.

The sources that Overviews cite still get visibility. Being one of those sources matters more than ranking for a single high-volume keyword.

What to do now

  • Check which of your own target searches already show an AI Overview, and whether your site is cited in it.
  • Write pages that answer the question directly in the first lines, then add the detail and experience a summary cannot replace.
  • Use clear headings, lists and structured data so Google can quote your page accurately.
  • Track AI Overview citations alongside rankings, since a citation can bring visibility even when clicks fall.
