WordPress 7.1.4 Security Release Fixes Multiple Issues
WordPress 7.1.4 is out as a security release with fixes for multiple issues. WordPress.org recommends updating sites right away.
WordPress has released version 7.1.4 as a security update that fixes multiple issues. According to WordPress.org, site owners should update immediately, and some sites with automatic background updates will start the process on their own.
The release was announced on October 28, 2026. WordPress also said 7.1.4 is a short-cycle release, and the next major release, version 7.2, is currently planned for December 8.
What changed
Version 7.1.4 addresses a long list of security problems in core WordPress. The published notes describe issues that include remote code execution during the upgrade window, several stored XSS problems in different areas, a stored denial of service issue in the Interactivity API, exposure of unpublished customizer changesets to unauthenticated users, and a permissions issue involving notes.
The release also includes an update to bundled root certificates due to the eMudhra revocation. WordPress said these security fixes were also backported as a courtesy to branches that are eligible to receive security fixes, currently through 4.7, although only the latest WordPress version is actively supported.
What it means for your website
If your business website runs WordPress, this is the kind of update to take seriously. The source says this is a security release, not a feature release, so the main reason to install it is to reduce risk from known issues that affect the platform itself.
For most site owners, the practical concern is simple. If automatic background updates are enabled, your site may already be updating. If not, WordPress says you can install 7.1.4 from the Dashboard under Updates and then Update Now. This release does not change the message that the latest version remains the supported one.
What to do now
- Check your WordPress Dashboard to confirm whether version 7.1.4 has already been installed automatically.
- If your site has not updated, apply the 7.1.4 update promptly using Dashboard, then Updates, then Update Now.
- After the update, test key site functions such as forms, logins, and important page editing tasks to make sure the site behaves normally.
- If you manage older WordPress branches, monitor for the security backport release that applies to your version, while keeping in mind that WordPress says only the latest version is actively supported.
- Keep an eye on the planned WordPress 7.2 release on December 8, since 7.1.4 is described as a short-cycle release.
