OpenAI has discreetly partnered with Shopify to enhance its shopping search capabilities, offering shopping-rich results. This integration was quietly included in OpenAI’s ChatGPT search documentation without a formal announcement.
Shopify Joins OpenAI Search
Aleyda Solís (LinkedIn profile) discovered that OpenAI updated their Search documentation to include Shopify among its third-party search providers.
She shared:
“Ecommerce sites: Shopify is now listed with Bing as a ChatGPT third-party search provider! OpenAI added Shopify on May 15, 2025, following their enhanced shopping experience announcement on April 28.”
Diverse Merchant Platforms
OpenAI’s shopping search delivers results from multiple platforms. A search for hunting dog supplies, for example, includes results from Shopify and Turbify (formerly Yahoo Stores).
Rich Results from Shopify and Amazon
The rich results, featuring images, are sourced from Shopify and Amazon merchants. One recommended seller is hosted on the Turbify ecommerce platform.
New Shopping Features in ChatGPT
OpenAI has introduced new shopping features in ChatGPT Search. Products appear as search results, sometimes with rich details like images and review stars.
ChatGPT uses images and structured metadata, such as prices and product descriptions, likely employing Schema structured data. It may generate product titles, descriptions, and reviews using data from third-party sites, occasionally summarizing reviews.
Merchants are ranked based on data received from third-party providers, including Bing and Shopify.
Ecommerce stores not on Shopify can apply to feature their products in OpenAI’s shopping results. Stores must ensure they are not opted out of OpenAI’s web crawler, OAI-SearchBot.
